3 year old: On generosity

My Monkey loves money.  He has his own special jar for change.  Recently he has figured out that money has value and we use it to get the things we need.

Today he found two quarters and decided he was going to save it to get candy out of the gumball machine at church.  He chose to take them with us when we shopped this morning, it feels good to hold money.  He was proud to have it in his hands or pockets.

About halfway through our shopping, we saw someone ringing Salvation Army bells.  Mama grabbed 2 pennies so the big boys each had something to put in the bucket - we want them to learn generosity, after all.

As we approached the kind man, I handed my boys their pennies.  Monkey rejected my offer and pulled his own 2 quarters out of his pocket.  He wanted to share his own money.  My 3 year old is teaching us about generosity and sacrifice.  He gave all the money he had.

I love that boy.

Mommy Lesson #4: Double Check

The moral of this lesson: If you thought you heard your toddler, check.. if you don't hear him from the stairs, look... don't assume it's the neighbor kids outside.

Now for the story:
I have an 18 month old and a 3 year old, I also babysit a 2 year old a few days a week.  Nap time is a VERY important of mama's day!  Yesterday I got the boys all down for nap at about 11:30, they were asleep by 12 - lots more squirming than normal.

In my now relaxed state, I decided to take a short nap - less than an hour - in my own room. When I got up, the boys were still asleep, that's always good news!  So I decided to do a little bit of other work and watch an episode of Monk.

My sister called to tell me she got Heelys in the mail.  That's right, Heelys - I was eagerly awaiting mine as I talked with her.  (Review of Heelys shoes to come in the next few weeks).  I thought I heard some talking upstairs, which usually means the 2 bigger boys are awake.  Then it was quiet so I ignored it.  Suddenly there was a knock on my door.

It was Mr. UPS himself!  He was bringing my Heelys.  I noted that the neighbor kids were standing around in my front yard (this annoys me but I ignored it).  I figured I MUST have heard them, and not the sleeping angels upstairs.  As I inspected my new Heelys, I heard another noise upstairs.  I hollered up to my darling Monkey and told him to come downstairs right now.

I went back to the "tv room" to work on lacing the great new shoes.  Moments later, Monkey showed up in the doorway, rather concerned and said, "I got ant on me".  Ant?!  I looked at him and was NOT at all concerned about an ant.  I don't know if I could have seen an ant.
My dear, sweet Monkey found the red finger paint.  You see, a couple of days ago I started my "organize the classroom space" project upstairs.  I did not get everything put away properly... and he found the paint.  He was pretty upset that he was going to get in trouble about this (I made it clear that I was not too happy with him).  As I started his bath water, he began rubbing his eyes, like he was going to cry.  You know what happens when you rub your eyes with paint on your hands?

It gets in your eyes, and that makes you cry more.  After a lot of scrubbing, I emptied the tub water and refilled it, giving him some instructions about washing himself as well - it wasn't... isn't.. all gone yet.  I went upstairs to check out the damage.

First thing I notice: red footprints all the way down the stairs - and red marks on the wall where he stabled himself as he came down.  Then, I got upstairs and saw the paint on his cabinets, desk, floor, some clothes, and the things I had been sorting.  It's a mess, but here's a small bit of what I found.

Have I mentioned that as I started cleaning I discovered that he had also found a couple of canisters of play doh and a container of moon dough?

Oi.... again - double check!

Julie's Craft Corner: Review & Giveaway

Meet "Baby".  This was the very first thing to arrive at our house for the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT.  Monkey hadn't quite started to understand the baby in mommy's belly thing.  I gently explained that this sweet owl was for the baby and well, he's called it "Baby" ever since.  He loves this owl.

Baby was made by Julie at Julie's Craft Corner, a great Etsy shop with nearly 70 crocheted, stuffed animals.  Each is unique and adorable!  She also sells crocheted handbags, afghans, and dolls.  She's even got some jewelry in her shop.  I love looking at her animals especially.  I searched this guy several times to find the seam, I know there's some place that she had to put the stuffing in, but I just can't find it.  That's good because it means that my boys can't find it either!  It's the perfect size for baby to hold, I can't wait to snap some pictures of our new baby with this sweet owl and its new owl hat!

Check out a few of the fantastic items you can find at Julie's Craft Corner. Note that all of the animals have crocheted eyes so there are no removable choking hazards for little ones!
This doll is 17 inches tall and has a removable hat! $30
Handbag: 16"W x 12"H x 3 1/2"D $12
I'd love to wrap a baby in this blanket! 36" X 48" $20
Take a look around Julie's Craft Corner at all of her great products.  Buy 1 or 2... or a whole crocheted zoo!

WIN IT:
Julie's Craft Corner has offered to send one of my readers her crocheted amigurumi stuffed monkey!  This little guy measures 6 1/2"H x 6"D x 6"W and has a cute curly tail.  This giveaway is open to residents of the US.  It will close on Tuesday, May 3 at noon EST.  Julie is expecting her first grandbaby any day now and this may effect the time in which the prize is sent to the winner.  Plan on waiting a couple of weeks to receive it.

Seeds of Compassion

Maybe you remember, maybe you don't.  One of the key words I want Monkey to know about himself as he grows is "compassion".  I watch with joy as this little man notices people who are sad and wants to do something about it.  He tries so hard to comfort his brother, and has recently adopted the phrase "poor guy" - I'm not really sure what he means when he uses it, but he's starting to identify with people who are hurting.

Today our neighbor girl fell off of her scooter and hurt her leg.  Someone thought she might have broken it and called to have an ambulance come so she could be examined (her mom was not home and they had no other way to get her to the hospital).  We watched the ambulance and talked about what was happening.  Monkey and I said a prayer for Marissa as they wheeled her into the ambulance.  He told her bye, see you later, and feel better.

He didn't just feel pity for her in the moment.  See, this happened more than 6 hours ago.  It has been on his mind all afternoon and evening.  Monkey keeps telling us, "Marissa sad, Marissa hurt leg, Marissa go hospital."  Even at 2 1/2 my sweet man is learning to care about others.  I think tomorrow morning we will make a card for her and deliver it.

Where did you come from?

This is the question I have asked Monkey several times today.  See, I look at him and I think, "you weren't this big yesterday"... or "man your skin is so much darker than mine" ... you know.. those things that strike a mama funny about her little man.

So I've asked him, "Where did you come from?"  What do you expect from a 2 year old that doesn't talk much? He's surprised me though.  Every time I ask him this he looks at me and says, "mama de-eh" (mama jennifer)... then he tells me "Na-ee name" (my name is Na-ee - that's what he calls himself).

He's puzzled by the fact that I ask him this question but.. where did this amazing child come from?  Okay, okay.. I REMEMBER well enough.. it's just that the last 2.5 years have flown by and he's turned into some alien monster that is wonderful and silly and adorable.  So much fun.

Any ideas where he came from?

My nemesis

If you recall, about a week ago, I wrote a blog about my "spoiled sleeper".  This sweet boy that has a hard time going to sleep on his own, because he's always been close to us at sleep time.

He is not my nemesis... NAPS are my nemesis right now.  I have no idea why, but in the last week, this little man has suddenly decided that he does not really like taking naps.  No, he HATES naps.  It's not that he's outgrowing them, he still sleeps for 2-3 hours (minimum) once he goes to sleep, but he does not WANT to sleep.  His behaviors, when he chooses not to sleep are ridiculous because he has a hard time focusing on activities (ie, speech therapy) when he's tired.

Rough week with naps.  Rough week for Monkey.  I'm working on a new nap time strategy.  Does anyone have a brilliant idea about how to help a 2.5 year old fall asleep when it's sleep time?  How do you teach your kids to relax?
