Food on Friday: The baby won't stop eating!

Someone recently asked, "What do you do when baby isn't satisfied after you finish nursing, he just wants to eat and eat and eat... and when you take a break, he screams?"

Please share your ideas in the comment box at the bottom of this post.

Here are a few thoughts to help answer that:
1) If he's truly not getting enough to eat, try nursing first, then pumping an hour or so later.  This will help increase your milk supply, and give you a bit extra for when you need it.

2) Try some herbs - They're not super cheap, but can help increase supply.  Motherlove is a great company that sells some of those herbs.

3) Swaddle him, and if he'll take it put a pacifier in his mouth.  He might like the feeling of being held and just need something to suck on for a little while.  When I did this with Crackers, I also patted his chest.

4) Burp him.  That might sound silly, but sometimes Baby has that problem.  His little belly hurts and he wants to solve it by eating more.  Once he's burped he feels much better and is able to calm down and relax.

5) Put a pacifier in his mouth and hold him tightly, pressing his mouth into your chest firmly enough to hold the pacifier in.  Make sure his nose is not pressed into your chest so he can still breathe.  This move works especially well with Baby.

6) Put him in his crib, close the door, and walk away.  Take a breather.  Step outside.  He might keep screaming, but it won't hurt him.  You need to let yourself get a break sometimes.

7) If he's truly not getting enough and numbers 1 and 2 don't help, talk to a lactation consultant.  If you can't afford to talk to one, or don't know how to find one, call your local WIC office.  They provide free lactation consulting to their clients, and can connect anyone to help if needed.  Their business is helping women take care of their children and they are very interested in promoting breastfeeding.

What ideas do you have?  How do you calm an infant that only wants to nurse?  How do you know if he's really had enough?  Where do you go for help?

Free Educational Activity: Pet Store

Over Christmas break we spent a lot of time with family.
My nephew, Bugsy, requested a trip to the pet store with my kids.
How can you resist that?  Especially when he's asking to do something fun, educational, and FREE!

Yep, I think a trip to the pet store is educational.
Why?  My boys learn about things like gerbils, and rats.  They also have the chance to see groomers taking care of dogs.  They love the great variety of fish and have plenty of questions about all of the animals.  Here are a few photos from our most recent family trip.

Yes, we took 4 dinosaurs and a mermaid into the pet store.  They sure did get a lot of attention.

Crackers and Stinky loved watching the cats run around behind glass while their cages were cleaned.

Little Lou and Bugsy took some time to check out the rodents (yuck).

Mr. Crum took time to help identify fish with Monkey, Bugsy, and Little Lou.  (He loves the fish - probably more than the kids).

Crackers needed to get just a little closer to the fish .  He's creative and found a way to do it.

I think we spent about 40 minutes in the pet store.  The kids would have loved to explore more, but Stinky was.. well.. stinky.

Think about it

Will this change your day?

2 year old: On Adoration

ad·o·ra·tion

  [ad-uh-rey-shuhn]  Show IPA
noun
1.
the act of paying honor, as to a divine being; worship.
2.
reverent homage.
3.
fervent and devoted love.

Devoted love, honor: Adoration!

I'm learning it from my kids.  This weekend Crackers was showing his adoration of Poppy (my dad).  Not only does he love to talk to Poppy, he just loves being around him.  On Saturday we spent the day with 85 members of my dad's family.  I LOVE New Year's Day for that very reason.  Crackers sought out his Poppy.  He was more interested in watching Poppy eat than playing with the other kids.  Just look at this.

I want to be more like my 2 year old.  This little guy wanted nothing more than to sit on his knees and watch the one he adores.  (Nana tried to take him out of the kitchen and he just went right back to the same place).

I'm just not good at being still and watching.
He devoted his time to watching Poppy.  I want to devote my time to watching God.  I want to learn to truly adore God.

My boy ignored the whole world of activity around him so he could LITERALLY sit at the feet of my father.  Wow.  I can't even ignore the phone long enough to read a Bible passage some days.

When we get close to "Poppy's house" my boys get excited.  Crackers yells and cheers, "Poppy's House!"  I don't do that with God's house.

But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."
Luke 18:16-17

I've had plenty of conversations with people speculating about what this means.  I think my kids know.  They get it.  Somehow they understand adoration so much better than we do.

Lord, help me learn from my children, who so effortlessly display their love for others.  Help me learn to take the effort to truly adore you.

Eat Smart Bathroom Scale: Review & Giveaway

It's the start of a new year.  That means new goals, a fresh start.

Did you make resolutions this year?  I am continuing to work on health and for me that means getting my body into better shape.  A big part of my health problems is related to diabetes.

I am working on some other goals too, I'll share about some of them over the coming weeks.  I'm excited about the new things this year is bringing.

Goal #1
Lose 30 pounds
That's realistic but it feels like a lot.  That is this whole child (I don't intend to lose him).

Eat Smart has offered to help by giving me this fantastic Precision Digital Scale.  I love it.  I don't have to wait for it to 0 out before I can get on, I just step on and it shows my weight (I don't love that part, I wish it would lie to me a little more).  It's sturdy, I don't worry too much about the fact that my kids love to stand on it and look at the numbers lighting up.  It's even backlit, so I can step on it in the dark and see my weight without seeing my belly even in the middle of the night!  It runs on AAA batteries, no special batteries required - and it comes with a set of 4 to start you out.

Bonus: This scale came with a tape measure.  I recently learned about how to measure myself so I can track inches lost, not just pounds!

I am charting my loss with a fitness journal blog that is nicely hidden and accessible only to a few people.  Okay, you could probably stumble on it if you hit the right button on blogspot for long enough, but you would not likely know it was me.

What else do I like about Eat Smart?  Every month they choose a cause or a foundation to donate a portion of their proceeds to!  In November they donated 100% of the proceeds to the American Diabetes Foundation and December to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Eat Smart has offered to help one of my readers as well by giving away a digital scale!  This is a fantastic prize that you don't want to miss out on!

Strangely Silent

You may have noticed (or maybe not) that I've been strangely silent the last few days.  We celebrated Christmas with my family on Thursday, then had a busy day of crafting with the kids on Friday.  Saturday we visited with one of our former foster sons, then had Christmas with our extended family at a favorite restaurant. After that we visited with some long time friends, and finally brought in the new year with my dear cousin and her family, my sister and her family, and 2 wonderful ladies (with their husbands) that we grew up with.  What a fun time.

Today was the end of our holiday celebration.  New Year's Day is probably my favorite day of the year.  I'll write more about that later.  Today we spent our day with 85 of our family members.  Believe it or not that's just a small portion of those near and dear to us.  I love my family!

Tomorrow I'll work on getting back on the ball with my daily posts and some prize winners!
